The Hybrid Lab: Conversations in Merging Dance Cultures at LAX Festival 2019
The first iteration of The Hybrid Lab happened at the LAX Festival produced by Los Angeles Performance Practices. The intention was to bring LA dance artists together to share short works who are in deep relationship with dance forms from Black social dance culture as well as contemporary dance forms. How do we merge these forms in our bodies within the contemporary performance context in a way that is true to the forms and cultures we represent? How do we reconcile tensions in our work and body based on the intersections of our identities? How is this work read within the performance art/contemporary performance/”high art” world?
